Neighborhood Founder-Buddy Milliken, a native of Shallotte, is the founder of Woodsong and the owner of The Milliken Company, a real estate firm specializing in development based on New Urbanism and Sustainability principles. Buddy holds a B.S. degree in Industrial Relations and Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a licensed N.C. real estate broker. He is former board chairman of the N.C. Smart Growth Alliance, former board member of the Cape Fear Green Building Alliance, a member of the Congress for New Urbanism, serves on the advisory board of the N.C. Sea Grant Program and participates in other numerous Low Impact Development initiatives. (Click here for a letter from the founder)

Environmental Design-Mike Ortosky is a Landscape Architect and Environmental Scientist whose primary focus is the design and implementation of sustainable landscapes. He is a principal in the firm of Soil and Environmental Consultants, Inc., located in Raleigh, N.C. He provided the environmental design for Woodsong including water quality components, open space and streetscape design, and landscape standards. He holds a bachelor of science in Conservation and master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State University.

Town Planner-Thomas E. Low, AIA, CNU is an Architect and Town Planner who lives and practices in Charlotte, N.C. He created the neighborhood plan for Woodsong and guided the creation of its design standards. He is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. Tom is part of a national movement for the reform of urbanism, which is integrated with environmental, social and economic initiatives. He lectures and practices across the country.

Civil Engineering-Jay R. Houston is the owner of Houston & Associates in Shallotte, a civil engineering firm, and is a graduate of N.C. State University. Jay skillfully translated the environmental and social design of Woodsong into construction drawings while preserving the enlightened spirit of the stormwater design.

 Conceptual Land Planning - N.C. State University School of Design - Department of Landscape Architecture -Under the direction of Professor Robin Moore, a graduate class developed conceptual and schematic land plans and a model street section which were used to help Woodsong become a sustainable neighborhood. Woodsong has also worked with Dr. Nancy White, formerly of the university, on stormwater design in conjunction with her water quality research funded by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
